Obiettivi formativi

The student at the end of the course provide basic knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry necessary for understanding the properties of the components of living matter. Describe the composition of matter, structure and electronic configuration of atoms, even showing to know the periodic table of elements. Describe the physical and chemical properties of particles. Explain the processes that underlie the main chemical reactions (hydrolysis, saturation, oxidation, etc.). Explain the molecular structure of hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds and describe the reactions that form the basis of reactivity of alcohols, the compounds with the carbonyl group (carboxylic acids, aldehydes and ketones), amines, tioester compounds, in order to understand then the reactions that govern the main metabolic pathways.  Describe the physical properties of the molecules in the cell and extracellular space. Perform the measurement of osmotic pressure of a solution at various concentrations and explain its role in maintaining cellular omeostasis. Calculate the pH of a solution. List the most important buffer couples that are biologically relevant and explain their role in influencing the pH of a solution. Explain the biological properties of proteins and other cellular components (eg hemoglobin and its role in gas transport). Describe the main metabolic pathways, anabolic and catabolic, and the transfer of energy (ATP cycle, glycolysis, citric acid cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway, redox reactions).

Then students should be able to: explain the basic structures and fundamental processes of life at molecular and cellular levels. Describe the relationship between life forms and their environment. Describe the basic principles underlying the flux of the genetic information. Find, select and evaluate various types of scientific information including primary research articles, mass media sources and world-wide web information, and incorporate them into the broader context of biological knowledge. Effectively apply scientific methodologies for problem solving. The student, therefore must be able to: describe the mechanism of DNA replication. Describe the different phases of mitosis and meiosis and the behavior of chromosomes and the most important differences between mitosis and meiosis. Known the Mendel’s laws and use them to solve genetic problems. Classify the different type of mutations and know the their biological importance. Recognize risks relative to radiation utilization and consequences on biological organisms in different applications. Adopt correct behaviours relative to risks in radiotherapy, radiological and nuclear medicine departments.
